“When You’re Mean A Black Hole Replaces Your Heart”

I really enjoyed our visit at Idlewood Elementary. If nothing else stood out to me, Jayvon’s comment about being mean did! It was so funny but he was so serious. I think that I was somewhat shocked at how intelligent the students were. I wasn’t surprised because it was an urban school, but I was surprised because of their age in general. The little girl that Jessica O. and I were talking to was very smart and well mannered. She knew that school lunch and candy wasn’t healthy for her and she also eagerly wanted to learn to speak Spanish. I realized that one worry I have about being a teacher is showing favoritism. I look at students like Jayvon and Raven that were so eager to participate and well behaved and I feel like I would just get so attached to them. I know that I will have to be very conscious not to show favoritism, but I don’t want my students to be able to pick up on any minute signs of favoritism. I also had a very serious reality check when we were talking to the teachers. I don’t think I really realized how busy we are going to be the next 2 years…I almost had a panic attack! Sylvia and I had to start talking about something else because it was getting very depressing!
But to end on a good note…being in a class with students took some of my nerves away about student teaching in the fall!
